Towards the Direct Economy

The emergence of the consumer as an economic actor in the production value chain is one of the most profound revolution the economy has known for a long time. It affects the very concepts of creation, production, distribution and relation between producer and consumer. The transformations are so profound that it is still difficult today to grasp where this on-going revolution is heading to.

A combination of four factors is generating a radically different economy. Namely: 

• The arrival of the consumer in the value chain, which changes the fundamental models of production

• The disappearance of old forms of intermediation, and the emergence of new intermediaries

• The appearance of new business models which destroy little by little the former rents extracted from particular situations

• Finally, pricing mechanisms which increasingly follow interactive bidding and auction models

By acting in concert, these four factors, central to the emerging direct economy, are deeply upsetting and dramatically transforming the old economy.

We propose to open the debate about the implications of the direct economy. Everything is in a delicate balance and risks to tip over… let us start the discussion before it is too late.
